Overview
Surah Al-Anbiyāʾ centres on the consistent message of the prophets and the urgency of recognising truth before it is too late, with its name reflecting the many prophets mentioned throughout the Surah. Revealed in Makkah, it calls people to reflect on the purpose of life, the certainty of accountability, and the nearness of the final return. It opens by warning that people’s reckoning is drawing close, yet many remain distracted and unaware, turning away from clear guidance brought to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Surah emphasises that every messenger who came before delivered the same core message, to worship Allah alone and reject all forms of falsehood. It presents a series of prophetic examples, including Ibrāhīm (Abraham), who firmly rejected idol worship and stood for truth, Lūṭ (Lot), who was saved from corruption, Nūḥ (Noah), whose call was answered after long patience, Dāwūd (David) and Sulaymān (Solomon), who were granted wisdom and authority, Ayyūb (Job), who remained patient through hardship, Yūnus (Jonah), who turned back to Allah and was rescued, Zakariyyā (Zechariah), who was granted a child despite old age, and Yaḥyā (John), known for purity and devotion. Each account highlights sincerity, struggle, and the support of Allah for those who remain firm.
The Surah also refers to Mūsā (Moses) and Hārūn (Aaron), who were given clear guidance, and ʿĪsā (Jesus), whose example reinforces devotion and obedience. These accounts together show that the message has always been one, clear, consistent, and unchanged across time.
Alongside these narratives, the Surah draws attention to the signs of Allah in creation, the order of the universe, the alternation of life and death, and the balance that governs everything. It challenges denial, asking how people can ignore such clear evidence, and reminds that everything will come to an end except Allah.
It concludes by affirming that the prophets were sent as a mercy and that the message delivered by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ continues this same path. As a whole, Surah Al-Anbiyāʾ brings together the lives of the prophets to show that truth is one, guidance is clear, and the outcome depends on how people respond.
