Overview
Surah An-Nisāʾ sets out a clear and detailed framework for justice, responsibility, and social order. Revealed in Madinah, it guides a developing Muslim society on how to live out faith through fairness, structure, and accountability. It begins by reminding humanity of its shared origin from a single soul, establishing dignity, responsibility, and awareness of Allah in all relationships. From the outset, it places strong emphasis on protecting the vulnerable, especially women, orphans, and those without support, making justice a central part of faith.
A major portion of the Surah lays down detailed rulings for family life, including marriage, inheritance, guardianship, and financial rights. These laws are precise and balanced, ensuring that wealth is distributed fairly, responsibilities are upheld, and exploitation is prevented. Care for orphans is repeatedly emphasised, with strong warnings against consuming their wealth unjustly. Marriage is presented as a structured and responsible bond, governed by clear limits, fairness, and accountability.
The Surah also addresses wider social conduct, calling for honesty, trust, and the fulfilment of obligations. It commands believers to uphold justice firmly, even if it goes against their own interests or those close to them. Alongside this, it exposes the reality of hypocrisy, distinguishing between those who truly believe and those who only show outward compliance. It warns against divided loyalty and calls for sincerity, integrity, and full commitment to truth.
It also includes guidance related to conflict, security, and collective responsibility, preparing the community to act with discipline and awareness in times of challenge. Obedience to Allah and His Messenger, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, is reinforced as essential for maintaining order, unity, and justice within society. The Surah highlights that authority must be exercised with fairness and that trust must be fulfilled at every level.
Throughout, the Surah reminds that Allah has full knowledge of all actions, intentions, and dealings, leaving no space for hidden injustice. It concludes by reinforcing that true faith cannot be separated from justice, responsibility, and obedience.
